How many times have you got home from work and decided you aren’t going to get up off your arse and go to the gym because ‘you’re too tired’?
You make up excuses in your mind, like you’ll definitely go at the weekend or you’ll wake up super early tomorrow and go before work, and then wonder why your belly is still round and the fat isn’t falling off you.
Well, next time you’re sat on the sofa contemplating an evening in watching shite television or an hour at the gym, I want you to think about 22-year-old Ben Calwell.
Ben, from Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, is a gym lover. When he was 17 he got hooked, trained every day and eventually qualified as a fitness instructor and personal trainer.
However, his dream of earning a living in the gym was shattered when, shortly before his 18th birthday, he was diagnosed with cancer.
“After a couple of trips to the doctors, infections were ruled out so they decided to remove my tonsils,” Ben told TheLADbible.
A few weeks later, the swelling in his neck had not gone down so he went back to the doctor where he was sent for a scan. While waiting for results, he went on holiday with his pals and just tried to ignore the pain.
But on his return, the pain was unbearable, so he got a private appointment where the doctor told him the bad news.
“I remember being told the word ‘cancer’ and it just didn’t sink in,” he said. “The first question I asked was ‘Am I going to die?’ and he said he wouldn’t know until they’d run a few tests.
“I ended up going to work that evening as it just didn’t sink in. I got home from work, went to bed and just cried in fear.”
